January 22 will mark the 38th year of legalized abortion in America. Since that time an estimated 53,000,000 unborn children have been aborted.
While passing our church sign during the last two weeks, I have often noticed the words "Happy New Year." Recently the word "happy" has caught my attention because I have been thinking of James 4:9. "Be afflicted, and mourn and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to heaviness". Yes, we do have much to be happy and rejoice about in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. And yes, the joy of the Lord through the Holy Spirit is our strength according to the Scripture. But in our nation today there is much for us to mourn and weep over. Surely the deaths of 53,000,000 unborn children by abortion is reason enough to wonder if we deserve to ask God for a "Happy New Year". Let's all take time to pray for our nation and confess our sins. Truly our God is a merciful and forgiving God if we will acknowledge and repent of our sins. II Chronicles 7:14 "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land."
Do you need God's forgiveness and spiritual healing in your life? If you've never called upon the Lord to be your Savior, then do that right now. Romans 10:13 "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." If you know the Lord as your Savior, then be sure there is no unconfessed sin in your life. I John 1:9 "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."
Let's remember to pray for and support those ministries that are faithful in reaching out to those considering abortions and to those who have had abortions. God's forgiveness, love and healing is available through his son Jesus Christ. We will truly have a Happy New Year when we experience God's healing in our lives and in our land.
